Ankylosaurus was a heavily armored dinosaur that lived during the late Cretaceous period, approximately 66 to 68 million years ago. It had a large, bony club at the end of its tail, which it could use to defend itself against predators. Ankylosaurus was about 20 feet long and weighed up to 6,800 kg. It had a low, wide body and four robust legs with clawed toes. Its head was relatively small, and it had a beak-like mouth with several rows of leaf-shaped teeth for grinding tough plant material. Ankylosaurus is believed to have been a herbivore, and its armor may have protected it from predators such as Tyrannosaurus rex. The name Ankylosaurus means "fused lizard" in Greek, referring to the way the bones in its skull and body were fused together to form a thick, protective armor.
